    VIVAnews - Sebuah studi baru menemukan bahwa manusia purba memilih rumput menjadi santapan makan malamnya. Melansir NPR, 5 Juni 2013, temuan baru itu didapat tim peneliti dari University of Utah, Amerika Serikat, setelah bertahun-bertahun meneliti fosil gigi manusia purba Australopithecus.

    "Kami menemukan isotop karbon dengan kadar tertentu yang tersimpan di gigi manusia purba itu," kata Thure Cerling, ahli geokimia dari University of Utah, AS.

    Dia menambahkan, temuan dari gigi itu mengungkapkan bahwa 3,5 juta tahun lampau, manusia purba melakukan perubahan perilaku makannya. "Manusia purba telah beralih memakan daun dan rumput," ungkapnya.

    Temuan terbaru ini sangat bertentangan dengan penelitian sebelumnya, yang menyatakan manusia purba sangat suka memakan daging. Temuan baru ini pun menuai perdebatan di kalangan ahli antropologi.

    Cerling pun mengakui, isotop karbon yang ditemukan pada manusia purba Australopithecus, bisa saja didapatkan setelah memakan kijang yang sudah terlebih dahulu memakan daun dan rumput.

    "Tapi, temuan ini tetap menarik. Perubahan pola makan ini telah memberi pengaruh kuat dalam evolusi manusia," ujar Cerling. "Perubahan pola makan erat kaitannya dengan evolusi ukuran otak dan kecerdasan manusia purba."
